Halal for Cosmetics
Cosmetics, according to its terminology is a range of products that are used to care for the face and body or to accentuate or change the appearance of the face or body. The products include skin care, personal care, cosmetics and fragrance. Cosmetic is a tool to make someone look more tidy, fresh, and to enhance the true beauty of someone.
Cosmetics in human history has been used since a long time ago. Thousands of years ago, cosmetics doesn't processed really well like nowadays, some of them are made from substance that has dangerous chemical properties in it. As the years goes by, people learn that cosmetics it's not just about how it looks above your skin but also the safety of the ingredients.
Made with various ingredients, we've learnt that, what and how those ingredients being processed into a cosmetics is very important. There's a lot of certification or claims appear regarding of cosmetics product. starting from FDA certified (in Indonesia BPOM), cruelty free, vegan, alcohol free, ecofriendly and even halal cosmetics.
All that claims or label has their own selling point. Because it is assuring the consumer regarding the cosmetics ingredients that they didn't fully understand what and how its being processed.
With all the label exist, we can say that HALAL CERTIFIED cosmetics product are the safest label. Because HALAL certification make sure that the ingredients are chemically save, no cruelty are involved and should be good for the environment as well. Halal cosmetics is a whole package branding.
In Islam, there's no mention about a restriction of using cosmetics. Islam told us to keep ourself clean and doing self care. Like using perfume and look tidy while doing Ibadah is what prophet Muhammad SAW did. But a Halal Lifestyle Enthusiast always want to be aware that their cosmetics is not containing ingredients that is Haram. Especially in Indonesia which has the most muslim populated country in the world. Along with the increase of halal lifestyle enthusiast, halal certification for cosmetics is a new "must" to escalate the product branding.
So, how is a product can become a Halal Certified Cosmetics? In Indonesia, there's already few brands that has Halal MUI certificate. Here's we will explain the step by step of being halal certified for cosmetics:
Registration to Halal Assuring System
Register the product to BPJPH or a halal assuring system on our country. This registration including company's policy, management, raw material, production process, facility and procedure. After register your brand to halal assuring system, it will be easier for the certification authority (MUI) to give fatwa or authorization for your brand as a halal product
Lab Checking
After submitting the document to halal assuring system institution, your workshop or factory will be audited. Then sample of all the ingredients and product will be tested on lab. In the lab your product will be tested thoroughly whether it's contain any haram substance or not. Continued with wearing test, for example for wudhu.
Halal Certificate/ Halal Authorization Obtained
After all the document submission and audit being done, the Authorization body will have a meeting and decide whether the product is halal or not yet.
With HALAL CERTIFICATION for cosmetics product, consumer will be assure and feel safe while using the cosmetics through out their day even for praying. So, on the other side it will increase the selling point. In some situation maybe your product can sell them self because of it's halal certification label on it.
